What are cookies?

Cookies are files that can be downloaded on your computer through websites. They are tools that have an essential role for the provision of several information society services. Among other things, they allow a website to store and retrieve information about the browsing habits of a user or his computer and, depending on the obtained information, they can be used for recognising the user and improving the offered service.

Type of cookies

Depending on the entity that manages the domain from which the cookies are sent and processes the data obtained, two types can be distinguished:

  • Own cookies: Those sent to the user’s terminal computer from a computer or domain managed by the editor itself and from which the user’s requested service is provided.
  • Third-party cookies: Those sent to the user’s terminal computer from a computer or domain that is not managed by the publisher, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through cookies.

Lastly, there is another classification with five types of cookies according to the purpose for which the data obtained is processed:

  • Technical cookies: those which allow user to browse through a website, platform or app and the usage of the different options or services that exist in them like, for example, to control the data traffic and communication, to identify the login,to access parts of a restricted access, to remember the elements that are part of an order, to complete the purchase process for an order, to make a request to register or participate in an event, to use security items during browsing, to store contents for the diffusion of videos or sound or to share contents through social media.
  • Personalization cookies: allow users to access service with some general features predefined according to a series of criteria in the user’s terminal like, for example, language, type of browser through which users access service, regional configuration from where users access service, etc.
  • Analysis cookies: allow the person responsible for them to monitor and analyse the behaviour of users of the websites to which they are linked. The collected information through these types of cookies is used for the activity measurement of a website, app or platform and for the creation of browsing profiles of users of these websites, apps and platforms in order to introduce improvements depending on the analysis of usage data that users make of the service.
  • Advertising cookies: allow the management, the most effective way possible, of advertising space.
  • Behavioral advertising cookies: Store information of the users’s behaviour obtained through continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows developing a specific profile to display advertising based on that profile.
  • External social media cookies: are used so that website visitors can interact with the content of different social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and that are generated only for those users of those social media platforms. The usage conditions of these cookies and the compiled information are regulated by the private policy of the corresponding social media platform.
